i'm working with adult with learning difficulties too, i will recommend that you by a PC with a touching screen, it's much easier to use than a mouse. this is a link about what the screen can do, for the PC itself, it will depend what is your need , what kind of work does the person need o do on it . http://www.allcam.biz/catalog/product_info.php?ref=12&products_id=99

Hi,
I am a teacher at a special needs school for children with severe learning difficulties and even the most severe child is able to use a touch screen or an adapted mouse. As other people have said it depends how severe the person is. Really you need to concentrate on the software used once you have purchased a computer. depending on what skills you want to work on such as cause and effect "Brilliant computing" provide a range of software for special needs (not sure how appropriate it would be for an adult). It would be very hard to get a "Free" computer for an adult through a grant of some kind I don't know anyone who has managed it yet but good luck.

Buy an Apple, which has speech as you type and reads text,
good for sight disabilities. I have to turn off sound on my iMac
OSX (Tiger) since it can be disturbing since it repeats every
key pressed and written text, besides warning you when an
Application is in conflict or needing your attention. Don‘t get
get a laptop nor any very small since it is an added difficulty.
However, all modern computers can adjust the size of letters
which, I think, is essential.

Hi
Spoke to my boyfriend who works for social services in the UK. These are easily purchasable and in some cases you can even get an IT accredited person to come round and show them how to use it. If you contact your local education shop or social services they will put you directly in touch woth a good trustworthy company that will discuss with the adult about what the adult needs and wants on the PC.
Hope that helps.
Regards
Patrick

If it is just to type buy an Alpha Smart - it can save and load documents and will print off any printer.
If it is to educate basic words or to encourage reading try buying one of the educational electronic toys around the stores at the moment - they are cheap and entertaining. If you need more specific work contact novatec and get advice on which computer systems you need

buy a dell.
the computer only needs to be of good construction (to save money on repairs or call outs).
the most important thing is to have someone to give you advice directed to the individuals needs.i would suggest visiting some of the web sites linked with your disabilities and seeing if there is a forum where you can get advice or share info.
hope this helps

i'd buy a notebook and professional level software bundle. having wireless access to powerful organising technology is invaluable. creative people seem to enjoy macs and this may be the right match for someone with an unusual learning style. however the transition could be frustrating. get lots of memory for tutorials and other learning aids.
search phrases:
"assistive technology"
+ compare
+ add
+ adhd...
i'm certain that there are grants for this purchase

A speech therapist can assist in obtaining these types of aids --depending on severity of disability and person's age some insurances will help pay
