B. SN2. In OH- + CH3I for example, there is CH3 with the bond to HO- just beginning to form and the C-I bond lengthening to break. So there are temporarily five things attached. In SN1 and E1 mechanisms, the intermediate is a carbonium ion in which one of four groups on C has left and C is C+. So that's tricoordinate. In E2, the OH- (for example) is involved with a H on the carbon next door to the carbon with the leaving group. So the carbon with the leaving group is not pentacoordinate.
