I've got an old ox-blood chesterfield that i would like to be more of a chestnut colour rather than the faded red colour it is. Can anyone recommend a not-too-specialist product or process that can change or tone down the colour without dyeing my clothes, pets and small children everytime they go near it?

As your is an antique style leather it has two colours on it . The top colour has faded and left the lighter colour behind, this is normally the way they wear. It is possible to recolour the leather and take it back to its original colour. This process is not difficult but is best left to a leather technician.

LTT do supply products for this and also have trained technicians who can do the work if necessary.

You given me the perfect answer. Give each of your children a paint brush and a pot of the required colour and let them have fun! Even the pets can join in (lovely footprint pattern?). In all honesty, I haven't a clue. I've never even tried to change the colour of a leather coat, let alone a chesterfield. Wouldn't it be simpler to get a couple of throw rugs to cover it? I wish you luck.
