Ok, I just want to know what everyone thinks about this.

If you haven't heard, they--the internet people--want to set up the internet so that the sites that are more popular (AKA: The sites in which the company that owns it PAYS more) will load faster and operate better than those sites that are smaller or less popular. So, myspace would load up in 1/2 a second whereas, a less popular site, such as... someone's personal site that THEY created using GoSafari or something, would load slowly, if at all.

Personally, I think this is complete rubbish because, I mean, it kind of prohibits our usage and just lets corporations control the internet. And fcuks the small people.

I am looking for other opinions. Can anyone see any upsides to this? Really, how would it help?

I should have quoted where I heard this. No, it isn't a rumour. I got it from two credible magazines: Popular Science and Reader's Digest.

And I hope you are right. I hope that this doesn't happen.

Well, considering the Internet is, in fact, every on line computer in the world connecting to each other via servers, I am not too sure who " the Internet people" are. I think its just one of those rumours that seem to surface from time to time. How fast a web page loads depends on to many things that are beyond any one persons control.

How much flash animation, Java, streaming video a website has will effect the download speed. A simple white page with text will load the quickest and highly animated site will take longer. Next the lines connecting to the Internet. As you may have found after 6 pm in the UK it gets slow because people wait until 6pm to go on line as the phone calls are cheaper. Or you may have Broadband which is far quicker. Finally the individuals PC set up, the more up to date the PC the faster it will load, Older, slower. Because there are so many variables I trully cannot see anyone being able to launch such a scheme. BUT, its a good question and I wouldn't be surprised if some Companies tried.

Someone has mislead you. First you are talking about the world wide web, not the internet. Internet is more than websites and no one controls it. Websites are hosted mostly by web hosting companies and if they decide to give preference to popular sites, it is their choice. You can always choose a company that is impartial. As to the loading speed of websites, it depends on a lot of factors and it is next to impossible to setup a system that will control the download speeds of a website hosted by an impartial hosting company. It would involve reconfiguring all the gateways, routers and servers and it would be an impossible feat. I won't get into technical details because it is beyond the scope of this discussion.
Rest assured, what you are saying won't happen.

I was banging on about this months ago, no one gives a crap and its going to happen.
Its called 'network neutrality' and we're going to lose it.
Yahoo is in favour of it.

Lets say you have a job interview at Crappy Cola Ltd, you go to their website to get details and wait 15 minutes; or worse, get sent to Another Well Paying Brand instead.

It clearly would not help anyone, and I doubt they will be able to do it anyway.
