I think of it like the shipping and receiving department, they box stuff up and A) send it out, or B) store it.

From high school biology I asked what did a vacuole do on the paramecium I was looking at. The teacher said it was getting rid of wastes. My analogy is a flushing toilet.

drakegta has a great answer. One additional thing though; they also bring materials into the cell through pinocytosis or phagocytosis in addition to storage and transporting things out of the cell as drakegta mentioned

you know those water rides in amusement parks? you know how all the water usually flows down a stream and has a pool of water that you splash into? that could be a vacuole? :)
