I know that I cannot set up a remote desktop with the version of XP I have (Home Edition) but does anyone know a program that would put it in anyway and allow me to set it up? I just want to create a connection between a Media Center (which is allowing it) and my Home Edition. How can I do this?

XP Home does not allow remote desktop - that's one of the features of the more expensive versions of windows.

If you just want to be able to remotely access your files, you can install CopSSH or OpenSSH on the machine and then access the machine using any SSH or FTP client.

Brain is correct on what he said. There are alternatives like GoToMyPC. I've heard of VNC as a client, I think it has a host to it that's free. From XP you can remote desktop to Vista (and 7). And if you have XP Pro you can remote desktop from Vista and 7.

What XP Home does have that you can use and it is very easy to figure out, is Net Meeting. It works well with "most" all windows based PC's. The good thing about it, its already installed and its some what secure, the bad thing, its bandwidth intensive like most remote control programs/apps that I have used.

On your XP Home version pc, just click on start, then go to run, then type in conf and that will bring up the wizard to get you started.

I hope this helps, good luck : )

How about "remote assistance"?
That's built-in and is located in "Help and Support Center" off of the start menu. Choose "Invite a friend to connect to your computer with Remote Assistance "

Otherwise, "GoToMyPc" or "LapLink".
Either of those are fine products which have been around the longest.

Here's a review of some programs. Decide what features you need and start with the highest rated and cheapest priced one that matches - and work your way up from there.

A lot of them may do it, but some are going to be better or easier in some ways than others...

You cannot do Remote Desktop with WinXP Home Edition. Having said that, I use Hamachi (www.hamachi.cc) to do file sharing and LogMeIn Free from http://www.logmein.com. Incidentally, Hamachi is one of the products from them.

Home edition has lots of networking options on lockdown. Even if you UPGRADE to XP Pro, you still will not be able to get it to work. A fresh install of XP Pro would do it, though.

VNC, it is not as fast as the Remote Desktop Connection, but it will get you by. Google it.
