I'm asking a simular question. My book is not finished as of yet. BUt it is coming along nicely
I have found this.
You need to get your book pulished. You may need an agent to have the publisher view your book you may not.
Once the book is in print you need a distributing agent.
So far I have found out that Agents take 15%
publishers take 20% and retailers take 40-60%
You have to pay for your copy right. maybe even in every country not just your own. How ever much that costs. the copy right only covers the title and the authors name. Not The actual manuscript. SCary and In my opinion stupid.
You also may have ot pay for an editor with will correct sentence structure and the like again dipping into any profits.
But hey if you have a best seller at .05 cents a sale you might make something.
Oh yeah and there are self publishers. who wil put your book into print for a cost. they will likely provide and estimateof costs for you. If that is reasonable it might be worth it. Yo still have to find a distrubutor anyway.
Oh and some publishing ocmpanies will have distributor contacts is that added on to their percentage? let me know if you find out itsybitsyminipini@yahoo.ca

I'd start by doing an on line search for literary agents. Research the writers they represent now, and their publication history. Look for clients who are somewhat well know and who have published with well known publication firms/houses. Most agents have guidelines for submissions on their websites.

There are also many websites that cater just to writers and poets that have information on how to differentiate between good and bad agents. I believe there is some advice on Poets&Writers.org that may help you. Good luck!
