The iPod is Apple's version of an MP3 player. They work only with iTunes (with some extra effort you can get them to play songs from other sites) and your own CD collection, unlike MP3 players which are much more versatile. iTunes cost 99 cents per song, $1.99 per video. MP3 players are compatible with most all content download sites, including iTunes (you just have to go into preferences and change the download format), and can save you a significant amount of money in the long run, as other sites charge less per song/video and many offer monthly subscriptions.

MP3 players also come in two different types, hard drive based and flash based. iPods and Zunes are all hard drive based. They typically hold more songs, but they are much more fragile. Flash based drives use a card similar to what you might find in your digital camera. These types have no moving parts and are much more resilient, therefore these are ideal for athletes and children.

Flash based players also use AAA batteries (typically only one) as opposed to the rechargeable lithium batteries of hard drive based players, like iPod. Those charge through your computer and generally have more hours per use, however, they will start to lose their charge over time. Some manufacturers are making consumer replaceable batteries for their hard drive based players, however, most do not. Because of this it can be a hassle to replace those batteries.

Furthermore, MP3 players frequently have additional features not available on iPods. In addition to music, videos and photos, many also offer voice record, fm radio, and/or other special features like an equalizer, games and alarm clock.

When considering price, durability and versatility, MP3 players are better. If you're choosing based soley on appearance and celebrity endorsement, iPod is the way to go.

Go for a iPod Nano or other iPod,
if the battery is charged/discharged correctly, and he looks after it, then it will give no trouble...
make sure as with ANY mp3***/mp4**** player that the items you wish to put on the player are virus scanned beforehand....
***mp3= music and storage of files
****mp4= Video, music and files... g/luck and happy christmas

if your son is looking for loads of songs go for higher memory like 1gb upwards 516mb is lower memory and holds about 60 songs so the more memory the more songs it will hold.
mp4 means it can play songs and videos that you can download .
Depends on age of son if hes responsible if hes old enough buy a good one if hes quite young a cheaper model is fine.
I find the argos catalogue has a good selection and explains the jargon better and gives you an estimate of how many songs it will hold .
My son had a 516mb and im getting him a £25 1Gb one for a surprise at christmas so there are all budgets out there.

20gb will hold 1000's that is some downloading :)

I would recommend either an iPod, or a Zen Vision:M. iPods have the advantage of being able to buy songs off iTunes at around a dollar a song. Zune can use the microsoft urge store. zen vision:M can play songs ripped off cds in mp3 format or songs bought off sites that have their songs in mp3 format.

WARNING:

The posters "Cream Puff", "Mr. Charles" and "ling" are Microsoft employees. Notice how they have no other posts, or posts only relating to mp3 players? They're being paid to come here and shill for Microsoft. They'll be more of them too. Trust me...I know. Fvck you Microsoft!
