I am looking for a way to get the internet on my Dell notebook, it is internet ready but I was wondering if there was something that I could plug in that I could access the internet from anywhere, not just at a coffee shop or library. I think there might be a service like this from Sprint or Dell. I have a wireless internet card.

You probably have a wireless card card not a wireless internet card. A wireless card allows you to access wi-fi spots in/around starbucks and other stores or offices. Also hubs and other devices. But what you are looking for is a wireless internet access card. You are correct Sprint does have on as well as several other access companies. The Sprint card works very well and can be had for about $80/month for unlimited usage and works in most areas in the US where ever there is Sprint Mobile Broadband service (most metro areas). The card is a PC (was known as PCMCIA)

Basically, there are two types of wireless internet. (There are actually more, but I'm trying to keep this simple.)

1. 102.11 a/b/g (more commanly known as wi-fi.)
2. Air/cellular cards

1. You're computer came with a card capable of recieving these signals. They're sent from things called routers which, like you said, some coffee shops and libraries have installed. What you may not know, however, is that you can even install one in your home if you have a high-speed (I.e. DSL or cable) connection. Stores like CompUSA sell them. If you do this, you can have wireless internet in your own home. This can be helpful if you have more than one computer with people wanting to be on-line at the same time.

2. An air card uses a cell phone service provider's service to send out "internet waves" (for the sake of simplicity), just like they send out "phone waves." This means you can have internet wherever that phone company has phone service. This doesn't come cheap, however. Currently Verizon Wireless is charging $79 a month, and Sprint charges anywhere from $39-$79 a month, depending on the plan.

In the end, it all depends on you. If you're in a city like Atlanta, where you can get access wherever you want with your free card, why pay? Otherwise, it might be worth it. It's up to you. Hope this helped.

There is a service like this but, to me, it's pretty expensive. You put the card in the laptops cardslot and (I guess) it works like a cell phone, pulling in a signal from practically anywhere. I assume it gets it's wireless signal from towers the same way cell phones do. From what I've read it costs about $50 a month. But why pay that much when there are so many free wi-fi zones around? Chicago, for instance, has free wi-fi zones around City Hall, the State of Illinois Building, etc., so you can use them outside near those areas. If you have to have access to the internet while you're on the beach, you probably work too much...

You can get a special card from Sprint or Verizon and sign up for a wireless internet plan (I think it's about $50 a month) that will allow you to use the internet in most metropolitan areas. It basically uses the cellular telephone network to provide wireless DSL.
