Ask him what he needs the money for.
He will say food, coffee, what ever before he will admit it is for booze.
Then when he does, go and buy him something to eat rather than give him money, at least you will know he had a decent meal instead of alcohol.
And yes your money fuels the addiction if they are alcoholics.
Bless you though for bringing up this question.

Whenever I am asked for money, I tell the truth and say I don't have it; I carry a debit card. I then offer to take them out to eat. If they say, "No" then I know they are trying to pull a scam. If they say "Yes" then I know they are in genuine need and get them as much food as they need. If I happen to have a dollar or two and someone says they need money, I think that it's better to part with a few dollars on the chance that the person may truly be in need. I'd rather throw a few dollars away to 10 con men than turn my back to one person who really does need food.

I always think "Gross" and keep walking. I live downtown in a major city and I get asked for money and cigarettes multiple times a day. I always tell them that I use my debit card for everything and do not carry cash. It is the truth.

Do not give them any money. Some of them are not really homeless and use this to make money. They have the same story every day. The least amount of money you give to them is more for you to spend at the bars.

I will give them food. Not money that they can spend on alcohol or anything. But I will get someone a sandwich and non-alcoholic beverage if they say they are hungry.

I always will give a small amount to a beggar. A few dollars, enough to buy a burger. Then when I stand before God, I can say I helped others. When the beggar stands before God what will he say?

i would do the same, maybe even take them to a near by restraunt, such as mcdonalds or burgerking and let them order anything they wanted and pay for it. i would pay for it with a credit card because they WILL ask for the change.
