Any epithet or insult you wish to direct onto yourself or your race is "acceptable", but if you step beyond that, they you are bad indeed.

First of all, most black people don't use the word and we don't like the word, however, if a few members of the community have found a way to take back the words power by changing its meaning, then so be it. I don't like its use in any context. No one in my family uses the word, ever!
IT IS NOT A DOUBLE STANDARD because the meaning of the word that is used within the culture is different. That doesn't mean that a white person can use it, and if it doesn't make sense to you, then oh well. It doesn't have it. You don't have to understand it, just know you shouldn't use it. And as a non-hateful white person, you shouldn't want permission to use it either!
I don't get why some whites feel they need to be a member of the club when it comes to our culture. You can't use it, don't ask and don't try to understand why.

And as an aside, there is nothing wrong with referring to black people as blacks. It's not derogatory in any way. African American only refers to those of African descendants who were born in America! The planet has many other black people who aren't American.

That word has been used for a very long time do divide the black community from the inside and the outside. Black slaves who were given priviledges on the plantation were encouraged to refer to lower slaves as ni--gers.

Then you have the mentality of KEEP IT REAL that says that a black person should never feel that he is higher than anyone else. By referring to each other as ni_ger we are KEEPING IT REAL.

Understand that the word is not used by hard working educated black people but the lowest of the low - as you said rappers and comedians. Honestly hte world would be better if everyone stop using it

The word will never stopped being used by rappers and comedians. Not only has the word found a positive place in black culture. It is also still offensive. Much like the shock jocks on radio, rappers and comedians often use egdy words to shock audiences. For that reason alone, these "professionals" will keep using the words as long as it evokes a reaction.

Well Im not black but a young black man who works with my husband answered that question quite well for me when I asked him why he was using it. He understood I was just trying to understand him better. His answer was simply that by using it themselves, they were able to take the negative power away from the word. But anytime a white person used the word it gave the word back its negative energy. He hopes that one day the word will be as mundane as the word sand and that anyone will be able to use it without it being concidered an insult but that was probably still another century or two away. As long as there are black people who still feel as though they are being treated unequally they will never feel comfortable enough to allow a white person to use the word.

He compared it to woman and that wonderful word that Starts with a B and rymes with Witch. I don't want a man calling me that. But, I will openly admit to being one. I take power in the knowledge that there are people out there that think I am that word. But, that doesn't mean I want a man to use it around me or about it expecially if it sounded negative or derogitory. Giving Blacks the space to make the word their own and actually own in in such a way that they no longer feel abused by it is one of many steps to help heal the rift between races but until the black man feels comfortable with it, it just wouldn't be right for someone else to use it.

I can understand where he is coming from. My Great Grandmother struggled with the word Squaw coming from white men. I watched her flinch just watching westerns where the word was used. But, some where along the line she found her own peace with the word in her own way. If this is the way that some blacks need to find peace with the word then who are we to argue?

Rappers and black comedians use the ***** word because they feel that there is a new term or use of the word if you notice like evry word that was used back in the day is used today but now as we say has a different meaning. And its not just african americans who are using this languagaue its the whites to and majority of us are ok with it besides its the word ****** that remains the same nit ***** for we find ***** to be a form of greeting or meaning a close friend or something but if we were to be called ****** that means that were ignorant and stupid and basically just the worst people on the planet ****** was a name we were called during the racial era and thatnamed stcuk with us only by those who are ignorant enough to still consider us as beneath them then there just as much as a ****** as we seem to them.

The people who use that word say it's a word of affection. Then others say that it is a hate word. It's never acceptable for anyone to say it, I don't think. It has such history behind the word. It should just be wiped off the phase of the world.
And you made the right decision not to say it.

The word was/is used by other races in a negative manner. But they feel comfortable using among eachother and are not comfortable with others because of the past/present negative use.

it's like this, ok, they are trying to show that they are "part of the system of n*****" created by the white man (or whoever), and so by saying that word in their raps and their shows, they are saying, "I'm a n*** too, just becasue I'm rich, doesn't make me any better" - it's a marketing strategy to show the lower (poorer) blacks that they are trying to "act" like they are in the same "boat" as the lower (poorer) people (even though they are rich)

basically, they (rappers and comedians) are trying to sell themselves to other blacks to make it look like the didn't sell out

Your question doesn't make much sense. As a black person, how does my dislike of the use of the word n*gger have ANY control over someone else's use of the word???

By the way, you're a stereotyping RACIST, sex kitten!!!!
