Congrats on your baby. I ended up having to pump for my twins.

1. If you are pumping exlcusively then you need to pump at least every 2-3 hours for the first 8 weeks. This will help to ensure that you have a good supply established.

2. Pump until milk stops flowing. Usually at least 20 minutes although first thing in the morning it can take me up to 40 minutes to empty both breasts. IGNORE THE POSTER WHO WROTE NOT TO PUMP MORE THAN 20 MINUTES. YOU NEED TO EMPTY BOTH BREASTS COMPLETELY OR YOUR MILK SUPPLY WILL DECREASE!

3. If you are pumping until milk stops flowing then you are getting all of the hind milk too. When you put it in the storage bottle you'll notice that after an hour or two the fat rises to the top and the bottom is watery. The stuff on top is the hind milk.

Hope this helps! www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping has some great resources. If you are an exclusive pumper then you might want to check out the epers board at iVillage.

Good luck!

You can see the difference in the milk as you pump.. At first, It's watery looking and after a certain point (usually only 5 minutes) it becomes much thicker and creamier looking. That's the hind milk. As long as the expressed milk doesn't look entirely watery, you're probably getting plenty. Pumping first thing int he morning is a good way to go, usually that is when the breasts are the fullest. And, if you have any worries that you're not pumping enough hind milk, just pump more often and closer together, and you'll get plenty to add to milk you've already expressed. Remember, chill any milk you pump before youa dd it to already cold milk, if you're storing. Good luck! :)

I only pumped with my baby and I wouldn't do it any other way. I pumped every 2-3 hours for 15-20 min on each breast.

Pump from one breast a couple ounces if you can. Depending on how much your baby is taking per feeding. then divide the milk up if you have more and freeze it.

Unless you have an oversupply, he is probably getting a good mix of both foremilk and hindmilk. Never pump more than 20 mins in one sitting.
