6 teams from each conference (AFC, NFC), make the playoffs: the winners of each division (4), plus the two teams with the best record, who did not win their division (2). These teams are called Wild Cards. All teams are seeded according to overall record, with several tiebreakers in case more than one team have the same record. Two of the Wild Card teams play in the first weekend of the playoffs, and the other Wild Card team plays a division winner. The winners of those games, plays against the highest seeds., and so on, until the winners of each conference meet in the Super Bowl.

12 total in the NFL. 6 from the AFC, 6 from the NFC. Every division winner is in plus 2 wild cards (AFC gets 2 and NFC gets 2) The wild cards are the two best teams that didn't win a division. The best two teams in each conference gets a bye in the first week of the playoffs.

12 teams. 6 in each confernce. There are the 4 division winners and then 2 wild card teams in each league. The 2 division winners with the best record in each league have a bye the first week. The other 2 division winners host the wild card teams. Once the first round of the playoffs is over then the team with the best record in each league plays the team with the worst record remaining.

this is how it works, you the AFC and the NFC and within those conferences you have 4 divisions, the East, West, North and South. Each division has 4 teams. the winner of each division makes the playoffs. the 2 next best teams in each conference earn wild card spots. the 2 best records in each conference get a bye week and the 4 remaining teams play in the wild card round.

6 teams from each conference, the 4 division leaders and the two teams with the best record after that. Tie breakers are head to head games, division wins, conference wins and if it is still tied overall point differential. The 2 division leading teams with the best records get a first week bye and the team with the highest seeding maintains home field advantage.

It's 12. 6 in each conference, with the 4 division winners ranked 1-4 based on record (ties split by head-to-head competition, common opponents, conference record, etc.) and the next 2 best records, who are ranked 5 and 6.
