maybe a photoalbum of his own family. One that can not be taken apart or torn up? My grandmother has dimensia which in a small way is like alz...we put some of her old photos together, made copies and had them laminated together in one big piece. On the backs we have the folks in the photos names, relationships to her, and dates photos were taken...(even if we had to get close...1950 ISH). Laminating is clear so the backs and fronts can be seen easily.

She is able to hang it on her wall, but she can also take it down when she is feeling mentally strong and read the backs of them to help her remember specifics about them, but could not harm them or tear them up because they are laminated. heck it also protects them from spillage and other lifes hardships.

This is also an accepted form of bringing pics to a nursing home, etc, that will not harm themselves with glass picture frames, etc that keeps many photos out of those places. The lamination can be as long or as short as you want it. We made a 5 foot "I love me wall" for grandma with all her pics...putting the "i love me!" in the center of the lamination. Very cheap to do too now days.

Good luck and god bless...

My grandma suffers from alzheimers too and my grandpa suffers from dementia. Grandma loves opera and when ever we put it on she glows! Grandpa loves movies and the tv show MASH so we buy him his favorite movies and he can watch them all day. They both also like good coffee, Coca Cola and anything sweet. If your grandpa has any favorite treats you could get him a few of those. Does he like big band music, like Glenn Miller, my great aunt loves to listen to him, she'll sit in her chair and tap her feet. My grandma, grandpa and great aunt live together now and we are getting them their favorite treats, movies and music and their own blankets for Christmas.

Due to the lack of recent/remote memory, I think a photo album would be great. Photos to include are recent ones of family, past photos of his friends, favorite things, some of his work, etc. Place small captions underneath. Set aside time to help grandpa create the photo album. Purchase at hallmark, walmart, etc. The time spent with grandpa working on this project will be priceless. Dont forget to include photos of you and grandpa having fun with it!

Sad as it is, no matter what you give him, your grandfather is not going to remember it or possibly even you. So give him something that he would enjoy and that would be a treat he might not otherwise get: some really good chocolates or coffee. He may not know where it came from but he'll enjoy it and that's you'll be making him happy ... if only for a few moments.

......." 'A leash?' he questions. The audience are all in aghast and boos our hero off the stage of Life."

Seriously, speak with family members and see if they have any old photos of the family with him in them. From this, you'll be able to create a "family album" to present to him.

How about the gift of music? Gentle, traditional old Christmas carols, perhaps songs that were popular during his earlier years will somehow find their way into his memories.......

How kind of you to ask!!!!

would giving him one of his own photographs be a possiblity. When my Grannie was with us, we gave her pictures of ourselves and some of her own pictures to "remind" her of family and that she was loved.
I understand this may not be a possibility if he has lost his memories.
Good luck.
