It has always struck me how certain teams can perform so well at home and struggle so mightily away from their adoring fans and home stadium. As a fan of Liverpool FC, I am dumbfounded by how they have managed to go 13 months without losing a competitive match at home, but have yet to win away from their ground in the domestic league.
Does the role of the fans really matter? I've always thought that, at the end of the day, it boils down to the players on the field and their performances. The fans are not on the field, and for the most part, are not involved in the action (unless they break laws and throw objects onto the field). And so what if they're singing or chanting? Does it really have that much of an affect on the players, regardless of whether they are playing for the home or away team?
