It sounds as though your idle speed needs adjusting ( turning up.) If you buy a Haines Manual for the make and model of your car this will give you a step by step guide as to how this can be done.
You may also want to try running some carb cleaner through the system to give it a good clear out. make you sure that you do not run the petrol level to low. This will help to prevent dirt being dragged from the bottom of the tank and help to keep the engine running smoothly.

If I had extra tips on the three hundred and sixty 5 days make and variety of the automobile it would help with worry shooting. some issues you're able to have completed that would reason this would be a music up, a vacuum verify, and gas rigidity try. with a music up in case you're taking it to a solid save, they could swap the spark plugs, wires, gas clear out, (in case you have a distributor) the cap and rotor. with the vacuum verify they conflict to work out what you cutting-edge manifold vacuum is and then run some assessments to be certain in case you have a vacuum leak. with the gas rigidity try they connect some gages to the gas device and notice how plenty rigidity the gas pump is putting out. If it particularly is low they understand you have a foul pump or clear out. they are able to then replace the pump. no rely if it particularly is intermittent and your no longer receiving a verify engine mild the priority would merely be a clogged gas clear out. there would additionally be a hazard of an electric powered problem. have the mechanic verify or replace the two the battery cables besides.

this all depends on if your car has electronic fuel injection or if it has a carb, if its efi then you need to have the system adjusted at any diagnostic centre this should be around 20 quid ish . if its a engine with a carb then your fuel /air mixture could be wrong and needs adjusted this also can be done at a diagnostic centre , another possible cause could be sediment in your fuel filter, that would either need cleaned out or replaced . you can try a quick fix like adding red-x to your fuel and seeing if that cleans out your system . otherwise seek a professional or a good tow truck number

You might have some water in the gas tank, or other foreign body. You might try using a gasoline additive such as Heet or STP, which help get rid of them. We had problems with our car last winter, and that helped a lot.

it could be a number of things. first, when was the last time you had a good tune up and service done? timing could be off, fuel injectors may need cleaning, filters might be clogged, ect........ Depending on all thats been done to your car or not to your car, its tough to diagnose, any one specific problem. Have it checked out asap. the info you have given isnt enough to diagnose with. good luck.

This sounds like an idle air control valve problem as well, not sure what year your car is, make or model, injected or carb but definitely sounds like idle air control. Please add a little more info.

like great comedy, the answer to this is.....................timing! You need to check out the distributor setting and also the carburetter. As you have had to pose the question, I expect that you will need to take the car to the garage - but don't let them try to tell you that it is a big and expensive job as I expect that it is not. I have remedied several problems like this myself with my old cars.
