I was able to trace one twig of my family tree back to the year 1040!! The Mormon Church or Latter Day Saints (same thing) have a HUGE on-line data base you can access for free (.http://www.familysearch.org/) Check 'em out before paying a membership fee to Ancestry.com or one of those other places

http://www.dnaheritage.com/order.asp You order a kit swob your mouth send it back and within a few weeks they trace your blood line and send you back a full report telling you about your racial background. From what I hear it's very effective and pretty cool in my opinion.
