The southern States were not allowed to vote in 1866, so the radicals won Congress and passed the 13, 14, 15 Admentments. The 13 Amdmentment abolished slavery. Eventually, the south was readmitted to the Union, and the radicals lost power.

The south enacted a poll tax. People had to pay to vote, and blacks couldn't afford it.

Sharecropping replaced slavery. Blacks still lived on plantations and paid rent with their harvest.
