If you are near by then the best gift to give a nephew is time. There are a lot of toys out there that he already has, but spending time with him will probably be more exciting. Maybe telling him that you are going to spend a special day with him so be ready at X o'clock on whatever day. Maybe make a creative gift certificate from you to him doing anything he wants. Movies, lunch, a ballgame or a special party with him and two or three of his friends...maybe he would like that.

I agree with Lisa. I got savings bonds as a kid...every occasion from an elderly aunt. It was kind of blah at first, but I never cashed any of them in....now I'm buying a house and my down payment is all thanks to my aunt.
If you want to get him something he'll enjoy, too, go for $5 gift certificate from McD's or something like that. Another thing we (my siblings and I) got every year from a different Aunt and Uncle. We thought we were the coolest things ever when we could go down and buy our own happy meal. They used to come in books of five, each page was a paper McD's dollar. It would be more fun for the kid if it was in this form rather than a credit card-like GC.

I think kids get too far away from their creative, artistic selves - with all sorts of kits, and all the parts provided for them. Why not see if you can sign him up at the local art store for a class? Or, get him some sculpey clay and the modeling tools that go with it. Or, if the kid doesn't want to get messy -- my son always enjoyed these books from Dover Publications -- they are like coloring books, except, they aren't little kiddish. They have optical illusions, historical figures -- everything from ancient greece & rome to abraham lincoln - they have birds, mammals, dragons, even Shakespeare; Something in virtually every subject. It's both educational and fun - and since the drawings are realistic, the kid gets a feeling for drawing, even though they are coloring. You could get him a few different ones, and a good set of colored pencils and a sharpener. It's sure to be a hit. You get those books at chain book stores, art stores, or online. Good luck! I've included a link below with examples.

Take him to a charity house of some kind that organizes and delivers food/gifts to the needy so he understands how others live, often through no fault of their own. Especially at Christmas, a toy he might think is minor or "low rate" (as my brother in law says - he's 14) is "the best toy/gift in the world" to the receiver who almost had to forget it's Christmas.

Give the gift of music! $20 will certainly purchase a CD or tape, all you need to know is the type of music he likes and the choices are endless. Or give the gift of a reading with a book appropriate to his reading level and interests. Just remember to find a book or CD that the recipient would enjoy, not what you think they should have.

I bought my third grader Aquasaurs (Triops) last year. He's into dinosaurs...and this is an actual living prehistoric animal. It's really cool, but the house got too cold where we had the tank set up, so the few that hatched died. Well worth the money and the great science lesson :o)

Does he have a favorite sports team? You could get him a team picture or a jersey of his favorite player, a lot of sports teams now sell mini helmets, just like the real thing only smaller. Check out ebay for these items or the sports teams web site. The front office workers for the team would be able to get you a picture.

sometimes the best gift we can give is time and service to others. instead of giving him a gift why don't you help him learn to help others. take the twenty and go get a toy with him for another child that is less fortunate. talk to him ask him what he thinks of the idea.
