Assuming civil war question here.

The North was largely a manufacturing economy and the south was largely a farming economy. Northerns generally were opposed to slavery and supported a strong Federal government. Southern states generally supported slavery and supported a strong State's rights and lesser federal interference.

The North because of its industrial base was able to better prepare and replenish its war needs than the south which was a major faactor in its winning the war.

In the north, the economy was business and factory based. The southern economy was farm based and also depended on slavery to man these farms. This is why Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves, to cripple the southern economy.
