I think literature should be since some things oughta fall under the parent's responsibility.

i also think that different languages
e.g. german, spanish, french!
i see no point in teaching these because its not like everyone is gonna move abroad and a lot of people forget it in a couple of months anyways!
i think it should be optional in years 7 and 8 too!

Are you joking? You think parents are capable of giving their children the breadth of understanding available through literature? That they have both the time and level of intelligence required to match centuries of wisdom? The trouble with those who are in favor of banning anything is that they know absolutely nothing about that which they would ban. Are you also in favor of burning books simply because you do not like the content? I am sure Hitler would give you an A+ in his version of literature class,a.k.a. Book Burning 101.
Some who have responded appear to have settled for puny little one-dimensional, self-centered universes without success.

Drugs, fighting, hatred, ignorance, dishonesty, alcohol consumption, etc. So you say, these are not taught in school...well students must be learning those subjects somewhere. Somehow, I don't think they should be taught at home either.
On the other hand there are things like honesty, compassion, etc, that indeed, should be taught at home.
The one subject I believe parents most need to teach is the notion of mutual respect and that comes from demonstrating it to their children.

I think higher math should be banned, or at the very least it should be considered an elective because not everyones career will involve calculus, trig, or even algebra! For most people, the basics will be just fine. :)
