My birthday is coming up and we're having a huge dinner celebration with family and friends. I'm curious to see if I had one glass of wine would it hurt? I am going to the doctor December 5 and I plan on asking my doc then, but I just want a few other mother's opinions.

WOW some people are really harsh! I didn't say I was going to or I didn't care about the well-being of my baby. I am already the mother of one; and would give my life and more for the health of my child. I said I was going to talk to my doctor because my grandmothers, aunts and other family members are saying it's fine. I just wanted to see if any other mothers had been in the same situation or whatever. This wasn't meant for bashing me over asking a simple question.

This is not about opinion, but about what is safe for your baby. I encourage you to talk with your doctor and to read some of the articles on the websites given below about pregnancy and drinking.

Some researchers say a small glass of wine is okay and some say not too.
Take a look at these links and you decide. Although I would go by what your doctor says.

I say don't risk it. You can always celebrate a late birthday drink or even better have a baby arrival drink (depending on whether you're going to breast feed or not)

Do NOT drink while pregnant. If I happened to see you out, pregnant and raising a glass of wine...you'd definately get the old "if looks could kill stare". Sacrifice for your child should start as soon as you find out your pregnant. You don't need alcohol to celebrate your birthday, try some sparkling cider instead.

Doctors and scientist will tell you there is no proven amount of alcohol that is safe or unsafe during pregnancy. They do say you can have one glass a day and things will be fine, some say one once in a while, but either way I think its fine. I have a drink once in a while, and was a heavy drinker before I found out I was pregnant and you know what my baby is just fine.

O.K here is what I think... I just did a large amount of research before I answered you. It does say that there is no way to know what safe amount of drinking can be done in pregnancy, but you're not talking about drinking in pregnancy, you're talking bout one drink. The research talks about drinking every day and NOWHERE can i find real info regarding one drink.
I posted a question here a couple of days ago about drinking at my brothers wedding (Dec 16, i will be 34-35 weeks) and my birthday is Dec. 4 and with Christmas and New Year's I have decided to have that one drink.

If a doctor says that pregnant women shouldn't even take cold medicine that contains alcohol..why would you want to actually drink a glass of wine? Is alcohol that important? I'm sorry but I say you shouldn't..your baby should come first..not your birthday glass of wine! GOOD LUCK & HAPPY BIRTHDAY

to me it would depend on how far along you are... Really you should stay away from all alcohol when you are pregnant but depending on the point you are at in your pregnancy I don't think it would be SO bad to have just one. two would be pushing it in my opinion though. but definately talk to your doctor.
oh and obviously its early but happy birthday

I wouldn't take the chance, but thats me. Why risk it? I mean sure SOME drs say its fine, but still, its my child we're talking about.
Think about it, wouldn't you feel terrible if your baby ended up with fetal alcohol poisoning!?

Why on earth would you even consider it. Get some non sparkling cider and save the alcohol for when your child isn't hooked up to your blood stream.
