If his attitude and they way he acts, speaks around you have changed from his usual habits, then something has changed from his view point. He may be trying to signal something (even if he doesn't know it himself).
If the changes are more flirty, then he is trying to tell you he wants to move to the next level. Not a problem if that's what you want, just flirt back. If it is not then you have to be really careful.
Without knowing loads about both of you ideas on how to let someone down gently is not a good idea, everyone is different but try to reverse the situation and imagine how you would like too be treated if you fancied someone but it was not reciprocated.
Your question is framed in a way that could mean you want to start something and want to know when he has picked up the signals and what to look for if he is interested. Suggest a little mild flirting with smiles and eye contact and see if he responds.

You can by when he come around you he starts to act differently by getting nervous or acting shy towards you and even being nice to you but that is not definite because most times they are mean to you if they are starting to like you more than a friend.

if he changes around u, like flirts a bit, talks diff. or gets nervous around u, ther is a chance that this boy mite like u
