Eric Cantona retired in June 1997 at 31 years of age as he didn't want to be remembered as an ageing player past his best.
He wanted always to be remembered at his magnificent prime,a winner!

Lol @ prof, suggesting that Cantona was not very effective... that particular comment deserves to be immortalised in its very own museum.

Cantona was a second striker. Law was a finisher. That's the very simple answer - it's very difficult to compare the two. Where it is possible to make a meaningful comparison is in their respective contributions to their teams.

Cantona was the catalyst for a period of domestic dominance for Manchester United, albeit in a league which was miles behind La Liga, Serie A and arguably the Bundesliga at the time. He was a crucial figure of inspiration to the upcoming generation of homegrown talent and left an indellible mark on the club. His creativity, craft, passing and technique were all world class, and his finishing was pretty good too. His relativity poor European form could be interpreted as a black mark against his career, however, given that the overall quality of the team he was playing in was beneath that of the top European sides of the time, particularly Juve and Barca who hammered us at seemingly every available opportunity it is mitigated somewhat.

The side which Denis Law played in boasted such attacking talents as Charlton and Best, and was a force to be reckoned with in continental football, although the competition was easier to progress further in at the time due to the restriction of one club side from each European nation being permitted entry into the European cup. As a goalscorer Law possessed impeccable timing, great touch and an excellent finish. He didn't drop deep looking for possession as Cantona did, as his role was different, as were his strengths. Domestically, that United side was not as dominant, but the competition was much greater domestically in the 60s and early 70s, with the league changing hands far more often.

In conclusion, Cantona was the more inspirational figure in a poorer side, and was a much more rounded footballer. Law was an excellent finisher, but would not have been suited to the role of a 'number 10', as Cantona would not have excelled particularly as an out-and-out forward.
