Religion has had an influence on politics in the U.S. since the Constitution was written, so I would guess for at least another 200 years.

When will Ethics and right/wrong end its influence on politics (anywhere)?
Ethics is the very core of politics, law, and civic life. Anytime a person talks about civil rights, liberty, and or freedom they are making a ethical claim. When people demand the government take some action on one thing or another, they fundamentally make that claim on an ethical basis.
So, in as far as religion helps develop and guide ethical claims, you will see it influence politics in some way.
However, it is my hope that in the future religion will play a small supporting role. That it will become a secondary ethical "tool" to solidify the "right" course of action in civic life....
So my question is.... When will devout religious people realize that we as humans were created with the ability to critically and rationally discern right from wrong and no single book can be the end all, be all to an ethical life.

All things move in cycles. Religion has always influenced American politics to a greater or lesser extent. Consider the many "blue laws" and Prohibition. As a country, the U.S. seems to go through reccurent moralist impulses. I think the influence of evangelical Christians is waning now.

It's taking too long. My hope is that enough people who are enlightened will make the effort to demonstrate the falsity of religion. The stupider and more fanatical cannot be convinced, but if enough others are, these people can be marginalized from political influence. Anyone whose thinking is not based in reality does not deserve influence.

Do you really mean religion or do you mean morals?
Religion has been used since the beginning of time to keep society in check before there were governments doing it.
Religion is the reason those of us with a moral compass have one.
The fact that religion plays a role in government now is quite a blessing. Human beings without a belief in something greater than themselves will never achieve anything greater than they can create separately.

Religion will never lose its influence on politics in the U.S. considering that all of the major legal documents have religious orientations, the moral ethics of the country have religious undertones and the separation of church and state is so blurred that it is not feasible to separate the two.

I will remain so as long as winning in the South is important in national and regional elections. They are the only region so easily swayed by religion-pimping politicians.

Bush would never have been elected without whoring his "faith" in his 2000 and 2004 campaigns to Southern voters. Notice how he barely talks about it any more. No need. He got his second term.

Religion is not even supposed to be in bed with politics, and if these so called "Christians" ever bothered to read their bible, they would see that in truth they have no business being involved in politics themselves. I guess alot of people have no respect for what Jesus said about his people being no part of the world. Hypocrisy!
