I am trying to clean out my house and get rid of all the useless junk I inherited from my parents that I never use and also, the stuff I've accumulated over the years. My new motto is: less is more. Friends ask me what I want for Christmas and I tell them I don't need anything and to please not buy me anything. I buy whatever I want or need myself. I have gift cards I've never even used (I don't like to shop). I told one friend to donate the money to a charity in my name but they insisted they had to get me a gift. I told them to buy me things I hate to buy myself like soap, kleenex, paper towels and toilet paper. They got insulted and said they could not give gifts like that. What should I tell them when they insist they have to buy me something? And please don't say something like a trip or a car (I don't like to travel and I have two cars now).

How about a gift card to a local supermartket? You need to eat right?

I can't tell if you are incredibly selfish or selfless! If you are not materialistic, than try sincerely to tell your family and friends that you truly would love if they want to donate in your name to...and give them the name of the charity/organization you wish!

If you can just be understanding of others having the right to choose what they want to do for you, know you must be important to them and they like/love you...it's their way of showing it!

You can show by example! YOU can give gifts of charitable donations in their names!

Sorry but you do sound kind of annoyed and whiny and hope I just don't understand how it sounds.

You can always donate everything they give you after Christmas to Good Will or Salvation Army or charities even overseas.

Sometimes the only person you can change-is yourself!
