What would you do if your daughter brought home her new boyfriend and he turned out to be Scottish?

It caused quite a stir and spolied our Sunday lunch. I think she did it to deliberately provoke a reaction.

I haven't said anything to her yet. Any advice?

Don't spread your prejudice! I'm glad your daughter doesn't share the same small mindedness.

Is there nothing good you can think of about Scotsmen? Would you change your mind if he was Scottish nobility or rich and famous or a well respected businessman? And loved her and treated her like a princess on top of that?

Are you just jealous that your daughter's interested in someone other than you and he might steal away daddy's little girl?

I'd keep quiet mate, otherwise you're just gonna shatter all her illusions about you and you'll drive her further towards talking with a strong Scottish accent, moving to Scotland, having a Scottish child either inside or outside of Scottish wedlock and if you think she spoiled your Sunday lunch, just you wait till Hogmanay!! Hoots Mon!!!

Well first of all I think you should appoligise to your daughter for the stir that was caused (whoever caused it). If she is trying to provoke a reaction acting like that will just encourage her even more. You should just accept it or atleast pretend to accept it, because let's face nothing you say or do will stop her doing what she wants, in most cases it will acctually make her more determained to prove you wrong.
If she is not trying to provoke you and he makes her happy and is a plesant enough person surely it does not matter where he comes from.
However, if you KNOW that he is mistreating her or she is unhappy don't cause a huge fuss, just simply try to discuss it quietly with her. Just for an example say: "You havn't seemed very happy recently, is there anything you would like to talk to me about."

How could it provoke a reaction? Or should it? She brought home a member of the human race, didn't she? I am an East Indian, and my sister went out with a Scot. Eventually, they got married. They now have two great kids. My parents just love him. By asking this question, it seems like you are the one who has a problem with this. Open your mind up--it is 2006.

Seems you have a problem with Scottish people, What dose it matter where he comes from ,surely you want your daughter to be happy, Don´t think you have the right to choose a boyfriend for her , do you? I think Scottish people are nice, how can I tell , because I am Scottish

You need to show her that you treat others as you would like to be treated, regardless of where they were born.
How would you feel if your daughter was invited to his families for lunch and they got all in a tizzy because she was one label or another and made her feel bad and unwanted. You would be outraged and hurt.
If the boyfriend is a responsible, mentally stable and a healthy person, you should feel relieved as a parent your daughter found one of the good ones.

I am amazed that you could feel the need to ask such a racist question.Hopefully you were joking but some folk out there might think that you were serious. It reminds me of the old days when Britain was referred to as England by the English and they played God Save the King as the English national anthem.

I would feel very proud and welcome him wih open arms, we Scots are the cream of the earth.
Now if she ever brought home an English feller, that would be a different story, that would ruin my dinner because the English guy would be wearing it on his head, as he was running out through the door with the help of my boot up his a55.
Not that I dislike the English AGHaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!.
I feel better now.

What's your problem? If your daughter likes her boyfriend and is proud enough to bring him home, then you should be proud of her choice and welcome him. How did he spoil your Sunday lunch? Did he dance a jig on the table and drop his sporan into the spuds. Maybe you didn't like his kilt and bagpipes, although I doubt he showed you all his kit on the first meeting! Poor guy, I'm sure he must have felt very unwelcome. I expect he ws nervous of meeting you and by the tone of your question had every right to be.

I dont understand what is wrong with somebody that is Scottish? And secondly, if your daughter is happy then shouldnt u be happy for her? I dont think her relationship should be based on making u or anybody else happy. U shouldnt say anything and just be happy for her.
