All of these antivirus programs have remedies for the renegade virus: Aliases
Virus.Boot-DOS.Renegade.1176 (Kaspersky Lab) is also known as: Renegade.1176 (Kaspersky Lab), Renegade.1176 (McAfee), Renegade.1176 (1) (Symantec), Renegade (Sophos), Renegade.1176 (RAV), RENEGADE.1176 (Trend Micro), Renegade (H+BEDV), Renegade-1176 (ALWIL), Renegade.1176 (ClamAV), Renegade.1176 (Panda)

is not a dangerous memory resident encrypted parasitic virus. It hooks INT 21h and writes itself into the middle of EXE files that are executed, opened or closed. On 17th of each month it displays the message:

(C) Renegade 1994. Hello Hacker`s !!!

Any of the above antivirus programs will find and get rid of this nasty thing. Alwil (Avast), and TrendMicro are free. Kaspersky, Symantec, Panda and I think all the rest have to be purchased. Why not try Avast first, since it's a free download. I've used Avast by Alwil for 2+ years and have not had another virus in that time.

Good luck to your friend!
