the main contrast would be the focus of their roles. Presidents of the early and mid 19th century focused on the debate over states rights vs national rights. Ultimately this lead to the civil war(not slavery). The expansion of the nation and folding the new states into the embattled union was their focus.

The 20th century presidents had to become World leaders after our entry into and success of WW1. A brief period of great depression followed changing the focus inward but then WW2 and from then on our focus was the World stage.

Compare in that each century had MAJOR conflicts that had great impact on the nation. Each had great civil rights movements. slavery, sufforage, 60's civil rights movements.

A contrast The presidents of the 19th century were more focused on protecting individual rights and protecting against the powers of the government. the 20th century began and still sees a trend in the opposite direction.

Hope this helps
