I gather you're asking who represents the music from this decade (aka the naughties) and also I think you're refering to alternative music.
The most popular alt music this decade is so called "garage". This genre includes such bands as The Strokes, Jet, The White Stripes, The Hives, The Arctic Monkeys, etc. As you can see most band are preceded with "The".
These bands are popular amongst alternative circles but more importantly they have infiltrated the mainstream.
It has influenced every day fashion such as well fitted, tight, dulcet colours, thin ties and hair is styled to appear ruffled.

Amongst the heavier rock crowds the trend seems to be emo. Emo band such as My Chemical Romance, Fallout Boy, Taking Back Sunday, AFI, etc. They dominate a lot of alternative radio play and they've influenced the cothes people wear such as black tight clothing, dark hair, dark make up, piercings and even sometimes adrogony.

After all that wafflinf i'd say so far either The Strokes or My Chemical Romance sadly.

Nothing 'inspiring' is around right now. Lots of very good bands, but none as huge as the ones you've mentioned.

Muse and Red Hot Chilli Peppers are the only ones who are even possibly on the same scale as the likes of Nirvana. Possibly the Foo Fighters, but that's pushing it. And one of them WAS part of Nirvana.

And I think you can only say a band inpired a decade when that decade has finished. Because the people who were inspired by them are still struggling with writing songs around this time. :)

unfortuneatly for us all... music has died. The inspiring band of our generation will not be under the rock genre, b/c music has changed. Guitar solos are somehow seen as a waste of time in songs now. Maybe they jsut don't have skill? I hate all this fabricated music that we hear nowadays... but if i had to pick a band... that i hate and yet truthfully think inspired this generation of soulless retards then I'd say one of those emo bands. My Chemical Romance, AFI, Panic At The Disco, Avenged Sevenfold.. some crap like that. Honestly i wish all those bands would go kill themselves now, and save us the trouble of hating them any longer.

I'm gonna have to go with no one yet since the music scene has been changing alot recently (last few years). Rap, punk and r'n'b have been dominating the scene, not so much rock. I would have said U2 and RHCP as well, but they were around in the 70's/80's.

I'd have to say that Coldplay probably comes as close as anyone. Not many good rock acts right now.
