In attempting to install a Bell South DSL system for my computer, the installation was halted with a message that no Network Interface Card (NIC) was detected. I was advised to take care of it and get back to the installation. I have no idea how to obtain the appropriate NIC. I don't know if it's generic, and one size fits all, or whether it has to be matched to my make and model of computer (Dell, about four years old), or whether I should just ditch the computer and buy a newer one with the NIC already installed. Apparently most newer computers have these NICs, but... I'm totally at a loss. Any help will be appreciated.

The best choice is to get a USB model to plugin to your USB port, this way you can use it in another machine easily. Any card with the proper interface will work. The new interface is PCI, older is ISA. Check your PC to see what you can use and any brand will work. Here is one that I have used before http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DFE-530TX%2B-100TX-PCI-Adapter/dp/B00004SYNX/sr=1-9/qid=1164657387/ref=sr_1_9/103-8052102-7388614?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

Just remember, you might also want a router/firewall to protect your pc from outside visitors too.
