Dumb idea. He & Big Papi is the best 1-2 combo in MLB. Why mess that up? Not only are you taking away Manny's production, Big Papi's will decrease also. He benefited a great deal with Manny hitting behind him.

It could easily be argued that other than Ruth and Gehrig there has not been as productive a slugging duo on one team as Ramirez and Ortiz. Gehrig had 117 RBI/year over his career of 17 years, Ruth had 100/yr over 22 years. Manny has 108/year over 14. Manny and Ortiz are averaging 130 and 140 per year right now. Manny is #10 on the all time AL HR list. He is # 25 in the AL career batting average. The only active player with a higher career batting average is Derek Jeter. So I think it would be clearly a loss if he were traded. Even if his productivity were to drop by fifty percent, he would be an asset to the team. The real question is, can he continue to play left field. He is a fielding liability even in Fenway and he risks his career every time he dives after a fly ball that he can't chase down. He really should be a DH, which he would be on any team that didn't have David Ortiz. If he were traded and could play as a DH, it would be great for him, but an irreplaceable loss for the Sox, no matter who they got for him. This guy is the best overall hitter playing today. If he retired tomorrow, he would be a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame. Like Ted Williams, he doesn't get the credit he deserves because of his personality. Whether you think he hustles or not, and whether you like his attitude or not, Manny's numbers are almost identical to Joe DiMaggio's, except he has a lot more home runs.

It depends on what the Red Sox get in return. There is no way the Red Sox will get a skill for skill player for Manny, as there are few in the MLB who can match his talent. However, I just do not think they can trade him for a prospect. A quality pitcher would be nice, then with the money that is saved from the burden of his contract, a deal for a slugger could happen. I was hoping a deal would send him to the Angels for Ervin Santana, and then the Sox could sign Carlos Lee. But with the Angels opting for Gary Matthews Jr. rather than Manny, and the Astros signing Lee, that won't happen. The latest is a possible three way deal that may net the Red Sox prospects which will then immediately be shipped to another team for a big name player (possibly Manny to the Giants for prospects, then the prospects shipped to Atlanta for Andruw Jones.)
I like Manny's production, but year after year he demands a trade. He did his job in Boston, clubbed several miles worth of homeruns, drove in a ton of runs, won a World Series MVP (as well a World Series ring), but it is time to part ways.
As far as needing Manny in the lineup to protect Ortiz, I do not buy it. Ortiz produced even AFTER Manny quit with six weeks left in the season.

Yankees dont want him.. and anybody with half a brain would know that if theres one place Boston would NEVER send Manny its to NY..so he could terrorize the Red sox for the next 5 or 7 years? LOL. no. I still dont think he's going anywhere.. I mean, i know Ortiz has a contract, but you wanna talk about one PISSED off hitter if Ramirez gets dealt, yer talkin about Ortiz.. when manny left and went on DL late last year, Ortiz' numbers went in toilet, he had ZERO protection... he will flip a freegin nut if Boston Trades Ramirez.... because they will not get back a hitter that can replace Ramirez,, there may not be a hitter who could replace ramirez outside of albert Pujols LOL. Ill believe manny is gone when he is gone..till then, i say its not happening.
Carla S ..at the top of the answers.. Who are you getting better than Manny Ramirez? He is a flake and ******. But the guy is one of the ALL TIME great rbi men in history of Baseball. thats right the HISTORY of baseball... you look at his numbers and you gasp, because theyre so mind boggling amazing. he has average 35hr and 120rbi a year FOR HIS CAREER! who are you getting to replace that if you trade him. He is a first ballot hall of famer RIGHT NOW! ....And this is coming from a Yankee Fan!

Well he was shopped around several years ago and we kept him and he became World Series MVP. He has 2 yrs left at $17M or so and that is almost what Soriano got for less power so the chances of Manny being traded are better than ever. The Sox have said on record that they will not accept less than fair value in return so time will tell what they get for him. They still need a good bat to protect Ortiz in the lineup, so we'll have to see.

I think the Sox should hold onto Manny...granted he costs alot of money, but he's a great hitter. At time's he can be stupid at the plate, but he he is only human. Fielding: he's improved over the years, not much, but he has improved. If he tried he could be the fast player on the base paths. He's a big, strong guy. If I had tree trunk legs like that I'ld want to try to run faster. If he goes the Red Sox's woes might continue from last year. Not that it was a terrible year, but not what was expected by fans and pro-analyzes.

Since they traded him, the Red Sox have been winning almost every day, too. Manny had become a distraction in the clubhouse, he was divisive on the team and he was going to be a free agent. Had they kept him, they would have had to put up with all of his antics, his pouting and loafing because he didn't want to be there, and then after the season they would get nothing for him. In that light, the trade seems a bit of a no-brainer. It hasn't hurt them this year, and it has helped them for the future.

I guess it depends on the return. If the Sox can fill a couple of other holes on the team by trading him, then it would be worth it. His absence would obviously hurt Big Papi, but it's pretty evident that he doesn't want to play in Boston anymore and that can only mean bad news for the clubhouse atmosphere. Just please don't sign J.D. Drew! They let Johnny Damon go to the Yankees, and now it looks like they are willing to pay this sometimes adequate player more than Damon? Whoever took the real Theo Epstein, I want him back!

As an adopted Red Sox fan I think it's bad. But if he goes to the Giants, Mets or the Braves (anywhere but the Yankees!) I'm all for it.

Not happy or sad. There are way too many rumors that go around and yes I realize there are plenty of sources on this matter but I will let you know when I can see what the team gets in return and I would really like t see which bat protects Ortiz if Manny is gone.
