There are a few ways people can get your email account. Best way to figure out how they did it is to contact your email provider and tell them that someone has accessed your email without your consent WITH your password. They should be able to help you with that. If they have your password, change it. Also, make sure you don't have any spamware or spyware that may have logged your passwords and sent the to someone. You also may want to increase your password "strength" by following a few simple rules:

1) No easy words or things that people can relate to you
2) Mix number and letters in your password
3) Don't use the same password for everything
4) Don't tell people your password unless you implicitly trust them (and if you MUST tell them your password when you don't trust them, change it afterwards)
5) Change your passwords regularly (and this sort of thing will rarely happen)

How do you know someone did this? If you are using an office computer, nothing on that is private, it all belongs to your employer and they can read it any time they choose.

If it's your home computer, do you have your password on a little sticky note sticking to the side of your monitor? How would someone get your password to log into email? A little more explanation might help us answer this better.

First track them down through your ISP, THEN change your password. If you contact the admin at your email provider they may be willing to help investigate unauthorized account access. Oh, and when you find out who it is, may I suggest a stun gun and a piece of pipe? Works for me around 100%.

they guessed the password, they used a keylogger to get your password, i would recommend changing the password to something more secure.
