Makes no sounds during filling.....fills fine. Actually spins, but makes really loud thumping sounds and also sounds like it's about to just die any minute (kind of like an old car that's about to stall), but keeps chugging along. I read somewhere that it may be off balance, but I tried running it empty and still had the same problem. Anyway solutions? Really can't afford a new washer right now, but need to know if the problem is so great that I may as well buy a new one. By the way, don't EVER buy GE......nothing but problems from my dryer and now THIS with my washer!

First of all, check the level of your machine. Take a level and set in on the front, back, sides and diagonally across the machine. The front feet of the washer can be adjusted manually. The feet on the rear can be leveled by tilting the washer forward and setting it back down.

If your washer is level, the machine may have bad shock absorbers. This is kind of rare with a GE machine, but not unheard of. This would mean that part of the load balancing is always going to be off (even when the load is empty).

No matter what the problem is, it will only get worse and more expensive if you wait and continue to use it in it's current condition. If the machine is more than 7 years old, plan on buying a new one. If you want a good replacement, you can buy a nice top load washer for $449 or a nice front load machine for $799.

Worked appliances for two years... if the noise doesn't stop after the clothes are repositioned then it sounds like something is either trapped between the drum and the side wall or the belt may be off course a bit and wouldn't be noticed until the drum is spun at a high speed. If you have some one handy have em check it out... most washers have lower front panels that can be removed others have to be laid on it's back ONLY and serviced from the underside.

If it does the same when empty, it could be a damaged main bearing on the drum (the barrel that holds the clothes). This is a fairly major repair, but get a quote from a repair shop to see if it's worth it to fix. One thing you could quickly check, however - is the machine sitting on all four feet? If it tilts a little when you push it on the four corners, all you have to do is adjust one of the screw-in feet at the bottom.

There are "legs" on the bottom of your washing machine. Make sure you adjust them according to how your washer sits on your floor. This will "balance" your machine.

Your load in the machine might be uneven/unbalanced. Open it up and move the clothes around and see if that helps.

Have you noticed any cats or small dogs missing in your house? Do you have a child with a manical grin and whistles as they saunter by as the banging goes on?

something may be loose, or you may have to shim up a side and/or bolt the thing down. Or it could be a belt or bearings so you might as well try freecycle.org for a new one.
