You can connect through a mobile phone but be care full as it can cost the earth. Find out how much first. You don't want massive bills some months later. Or get a phone line connected.
You can download msn messenger onto a laptop easily. but you will need an internet connection via a phone connection and modem or router and filter. Keep asking till you find an expert. I am not. Hope that's of some help and not to confusing.

There are some basic requirements for MSN Messenger. The first is hardware - minimum RAM, free harddrive space, etc. Check the MSN Messenger website for those details. The second requirement would be getting setup with an interent provider. She could go wireless or wired (dsl/cable). Wireless would require purchasing a wireless NIC card. Wired would require the appropriate modem from the internet provider. Once she is setup with an internet connection, she should be able to download and run MSN Messenger.

That depends on a few variables. If the laptop has no phone line (which is strange since they've been coming standard on all computer for years even up until now) and YOUR internet service is dial-up, you will need a router in order to connect her laptop to the internet. (Actually, you will need a router no matter what type of connection you have) If she is not connected to a network that provides internet, or she is not connected directly to an internet connection (whether it be a phone line "dial-up" or otherwise) she will not be able to use MSN messenger.

Your daughter can connect to the internet via a laptop - it is just the method in which you do this.
The various ways you can do this is, via the phone line as you mentioned.
Go to broadband (hi-speed)- you will get a seperate connection in your home and this will not disrupt your phone line.
Or you could go wireless.
Now since you have all these options which do you choose? Well the first place I would start is checking with your local ISP (Internet Service Provider) and see what is on offer in your area.
For example I live in New Zealand and we have a few companies offering services.

So it pays to shop around and work out what is best for you. Here is a good article I found on the net in the UK
