This may sound crazy, but it works. My daughter is a single mom with 2. She keeps everything "un-plugged", except her refrigerator, until she has to use it. Her friends thought she was crazy too...until she proudly showed them her $37 bill for the month of February on a 2-bdrm apt with a Washer/Dryer. She also quit using the auto dishwasher (simply to conserve on the electric). Use clocks that run on batteries. Buy those new spiral, energy light bulbs...they do help, and don't plug the lamps in unless you have to. She kept her AC thermostat set about 78-80 and heat at 68, she is teaching her little ones to conserve too, and to dress appropriately. Hope this helps...good luck!!

depending on the electric company, You start by turning things off before you leave a room, but it you're looking to just make the bills more affordable and not really cut down on usage ask you EC about a form of "balanced billing" where they average out the last 12 months of billing and you pay that set amount for the next 12 months

Query for lower power bill. You'll find a few answers out there.

Turn off all appliances you aren't using. See if your landlord will help with improving insulation if needed.

Try energy-saving lights. Turn down the heat. Lights off when not in the room. TV off unless you are really watching it. Insulate around windows so you don't have to turn up the heat to ward off the chill.

compact flourescent light bulbs and turning lights off when you aren't in a room are great starters. Also, if you have things PLUGGED IN but NOT TURNED ON, such as a fan or other devices like that, you should unplug them.

Fluorscent lights, that really helps

lower the heat a little, keep it on the cool side, turn it off when you aren't at home.
