A political coup (coup d'etat) is when an individual or group of leaders seizes power from an existing government. The coup can be performed through violent military assault as Pinochet did in Chile or in a bloodless (minimal casualties) manner as Pervez Musharraf performed in Pakistan. The coup plotter or plotters can either rule autocratically or yield to a democracy, but the main characteristic of any coup is its suddeness: power should be transferred in a matter of days tops.
