My three month old has cradle cap, and she was born with a ton of long black hair. She is loosing her hair like crazy (I KNOW it's normal to a certain degree) But can cradle cap cause more hair loss in infants?

And also, I have started to use canola oil in her hair (more natural than baby oil), I have let it sit for an hour, then scrubed her head with a soft brush, then shampooed. I will do this every day.

Is there anything else you recommed (home remedies) NOT OVER THE COUNTER PRODUCTS. I cannot afford anything right now.

once the cradle cap (or cradle crap as we called it) blocks off the oxygen to the scalp the follicle and the root will die causing the hair to fall out.
don't wash it every day as the body is already starting to kick in with an over drying mechanism-this will make the cradle crap worse. try every 2-3 days even if this means leaving stuff on her head for 2 -3 days. she'll be okay i promise, especially if it's just oil. try extra virgin olive oil though, not canola.

A sure cure for us though was good old fashioned mayonnaise. (NOT MIRACLE WHIP )Use the baby brush to get it massaged in good and leave it on for a couple of hours. Do this every couple of days before you shampoo and it will help in about a week.

Good luck, and don't worry, lots of baby's get cradle crap it's not a reflection on you.

Remedy For Cradle Cap

My mother vows olive oil is the sure fire cure. She says baby oil will not do it, but olive oil will. Rub it into the hair and all over the scalp and leave it. Maybe you could do it at bedtime, and put a towel under baby's head for sleep. Then, you could wash the hair in the morning so baby won't smell like a salad bar all day! Anyway, Mother used this on me when I was a baby, and I'm 46 and haven't had cradle cap since! ;- D I guess it worked for me! Fairelight

I used olive oil and soft brush....like a toothbrush to loosen up the scales a bit. Also, after washing my baby's hair, I would brush in some cocoa butter (or any baby lotion would be fine too....baby oil if you have it works good.) Just remember to brush away the loose scales and do not try to scratch them off the scalp, since this can cause even more irritation

Honestly, I'd just leave it alone. It'll most likely go away as your child gets older. It's a natural part of being a baby - just make sure you're keeping the child's head and hair clean and you're doing the right thing.

mineral oil or baby oil (they are the same thing)
massage it into the scalp after washing your babies hair.
be gentle with the brushing and combing as cradle cap can bleed underneath

Try putting mineral oil in her hair my baby was the same way and my friend told me about the mineral oil and it worked. Do not use baby oil or Vaseline it makes it worse.

call up the pediatrican and ask what they would perscribe. baby oil or baby lotion works best.. bc you can't use adult dandruff shampoos on your baby it may be to strong.
