depends on who you are talking about

As most of these answers have eluded to, it depends on who you are talking about. Given the salary cap in the NFL, most contracts are weighted with performance bonus'. So for example a quarterback is paid a base salary (for example purposes lets say $3 million per year). That plus his performance bonus would equal his yearly salary. Bonus catagories can include - percentage of offensive plays per year, yardage, touchdowns, turnovers, and or an overall quarterback rating. As another example look at Chad Pennington's contract (starting qb, NY Jets) In order to fall under the salary cap guidelines for this season, the Jets restructured his contract. He has often been injured so the team based his performance bonus off of the % of offensive plays where he is the quarterback. In order to earn his bonus, he had to be the qb for 60% of the offensive plays. So he earned a base salary of $3 million for the season, and an additional $6 million for his playing time bonus. He has already "earned" his bonus for the year, even if he is injured tomorrow and never plays another snap. The following link will take you to report from the NFL where you can see the salaries for the 2005 season for any player http://asp.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/playersbyposition.aspx?pos=3
