In French and Spanish it's called "double v".

All I can suggest is that, in some handwriting, it is rounded at he bottom, rather than pointed, particularly in lower case, and then it looks like uu joined up, rather than v v.
Whether it looked like uu in the handwriting prevalent when it got its name is another matter.
Anyway, a "Vee double-Vee Beetle" doesn't sound quite right, so I'm glad it's pronounced "double-you". And what would happen to George Dubya Bush?.

Because at one time writing was done using rounded curves so that the writing flowed `out` of the pen and was done without taking the pen off the paper to form a letter.Angular writing came at a much later date. This is the reason it was refer ed to as `joined up writing`.

In English it is double U but in Spanish it is "doble V"
and in Portuguese it has been removed from the
alphabet, although it continues in use as doubleu!

There's no real reason. Some people actually do write it in a curved manner like myself. Be happy that it's not called something completely non-sensical like "double c" or something.
