Connection diagram cable modem -- > g-router -- > G5 -- > laptop. Once in a while, when Im using the laptop at the same room as the router, I can wire connect to it. Will file transfer and online connection be faster via hard wire from router to laptop?

The answers you're getting are on track. You'll nearly always get more speed with your wired network, but if you're just using it to access the internet, you probably won't notice. Wireless also varies a lot, if you're 200 feet away from your access point, and seperated by a metal wall, you're likely to get 2mbps at best.

Here's a list of reasonable speeds to expect:
Wireless G- 2 - 54mbps.
(You'll get 54 in close range/good conditions, if you're the only one using it.)
Wired Local area network- 10/100 mbps
Wired Local area network with a nice budget- 10/100/1000
(usually used with a company's servers, ect)
REALLY old Wired Local area network- 10mbps
(or even lower)

home internet - usually 56kbps - 2mbps
home internet with a very nice connection - 1 -10 mbps
business internet - often 1.5Mbps for a small company 45Mbps for a large company

Unless you are running 108mbps Wireless G, your ethernet will almost always be faster (since you're using a G5 I'm assuming your hardware is fairly new, meaning you're network card is probably a 10/100). Even if they both happen to be running at their peak, in the big scheme of things, wireless is relatively less stable that ethernet. Because wireless connections are not hard lines, their connection fluctuates depending on things like "noise" interference (meaning other things that use the same frequency as your wireless). Fastest connection would most likely be laptop>router. If you can't connect directly, then go wireless from router to laptop. Jumping it through your G5 will only cause one more step for your connection to jump through (and you connection will only be as fast as your slowest link. So don't add more connections to go through)

File transfer ON YOUR OWN LAN is going to be about twice as fast with the wired hookup, but Shining So had the other part right. With only 10Mb/s available even from Verizon's FIOS fiber optic service, there will not be a speed difference as far as the internet is concerned. If your ISP only allows you 10 MB/s it doesn't matter whether you are CAPABLE of downloading at 54MB/s or 100 MB/s or even 1000MB/s (Gigabit Ethernet), all you are getting at your end of the internet pipe is 10 MB/s or less.

Yes it will be slightly faster, but the difference is very minimal, so if you have the cable laying around go for it. If you have to buy it you should just save your money. - Well that could be due to your ISP and what service you are using. What kind of connection are you running? (Dsl, Cable, Fiber, Etc.) - Your mouse shouldn't be affecting the router. It may just be the signal your router is sending out. Go into your ps3 and run a diagnostic on your network connectivity. It should tell you if it's your router issue that's causing low bars.

What ever you have comming in will always be the typicle speed. The data transfer in a CAT5 will always work faster then wireless. So no matter what speed your wireless router says. The bottom line in this matter is how much your ISP provides ...

depends on the type of ethernet, and the type of wireless.

In general ethernet will be much faster, but some of the very old "thin wire" ethernets are now only just faster than top end wireless, and can be slower if poorly maintained

It will also depend on the speed of the connector on your laptop

Trust me, a 10-15Mb wireless and a 100Mb/1Gbit ethernet cable make no diff. in internet speed considering even cable tops out at 7Mb. With file transfer it could be faster wired but it depends on if your LAN cards can even transfer 1Bg/s of data.
