is there any way I can change the region from 1 to 2 with a free download??

to REALLY change it, you'd have to update the firmware on the actual drive which i wouldn't recommend if you don't know what you're doing because if it goes wrong your drive will be toast.
instead use 'dvd region killer' which will quietly bypass the region encoding of any disc you put in the drive. it's free from here:

Just buy a new dvd player..........they very cheap these days, I've just seen one for £12 (approx $20).

No, that's set by microsoft and even if you reinstall windows, you're stuck with it. If you find a crack, I wouldn't trust it becuase if you mess that up, you'll be screwed.
