I'm sorry but I just don't see it. It's sad to think that we can't even wish strangers a Merry Christmas because we might offend them. The stores are still posting the number of shopping days til Christmas and running ads for that "perfect" Christmas gift. I just wish that we could put the Christ back in Christmas.

There is no connection between the two. No one is holding a gun to your head saying you must buy this or that, even though you feel they are. If you don't like the commercialization of Christmas, don't participate in it, simple as that. But complaining and preaching won't do anything to change it. The retail stores are a necessary evil you could say. You would have to get rid of every single one first and then we'd have to go back to primitive times when you either made your stuff by hand or did without. No one wants to do that. Just avoid the stores if they bother you. Change the channels when the commercials come on. It's not hard to do. Create your own traditions that don't involve shopping or gifts at all if you hate it that much.

stores always want people to buy buy buy around christmas time so that's not too surprising to me, but most people know that the true meaning of christmas has to do with Jesus, and giving to others in more ways than presents in order to make him happy. that's how people celebrate Christ's birthday, by giving to the less fortunate, symbolizing and act of God. so there's the true meaning of christmas, and the stores will always be pushing gifts around this time of year. it's like their tradition

"...the true reason for christmas?"

That it's a commercialisation
of a Christianisation
of a Pagan mid-winter festival.

The behaviour of the crowds seem to make that clear,
as supported by the figures from credit card companies and the image selling of the big-money advertisers.

(at least for the UK and USA: other regions may differ)

Amongst the hordes, however, there is plenty of room for individuals and groups to take from the season whatever they feel to be relevant and true.

I think word is getting out, but next we need to educate people that paganism isn't evil and it's okay to celebrate anyway because light, life, togetherness, and community are universal human themes that don't belong to any one religion.

Stores are just trying to cook their books for a big year-end finish, and are probably threatened also by online shopping. Personally, I think if they didn't try to get people to spread out their shopping since Labor Day they'd have better luck.

Is there a question or you just feel like preaching to people who really don't care to hear it?
