You don't want to smell straight from the beaker because that can be dangerous. Keep the beaker away from your face and waft the "smelly air" with your hand to your nose.

Hold the beaker about a foot away from your face and use your hand to waft the air above it towards you.

Trust me, sticking your head over a beaker of ammonium hydroxide and taking a big snort is a mistake you will never make twice;)
