All large metropolitan areas have crime, but I would hesitate to say that "cities in Michigan are bad". Detroit is not first on my list of places to visit, but there are many other cities in Michigan. Im from the Chicago area and love going downtown. There is crime, but Chicago is a great city, with excellent food and friendly people. I did not have a great experience in Atlanta, Georgia and did not feel safe walking to my car with my wife and son. Even the police were jerks. Maybe they were mad becuase the Braves lost to the Cubs ;o) I lived for 8 years in Pheonix, Arizona. Its a small city comparitively but there are thousands of things to do in Arizona and the state is gorgeous. Just be prepared for the heat if your going in the summer time. When I travel I expect there to be crime. I go to Puerto Rico often and there is plenty of crime, but it doesnt stop me from enjoying that beautiful Island and fun loving people.

Cities that have a greater infrastructure often have less crime rate. Boston is one that comes to mind. The cities in Michigan are bad. New York City is not so terrible. Memphis is bad. Miami, most of it is actually ok.

Like all cities, they have their bad spots. Just stay out of them. Good idea to call a police station there and ask them where to go and where to stay out of.

I agree. I spent a winderful in Pittsburgh last spring. Went to a Pirates game too! Best ballpark besides Fenway in Boston that I have been to.

Cities worth visiting that are pretty safe include NY, Boston, Washington DC, Seattle, San Fran, San Diego, San Antonio, Pittsburgh (yes! really! it's an overlooked gem) and Chicago.
