1. Know your rings. Make sure you know all that you can about diamonds before you even check them out on eBay. Learn about the 4 C's and metals used in jewelry. Then have an idea about what you are shopping for, and set your range (price, size, color, cut, etc...) There are so many rings on eBay that you have to be able to narrow down your selection, otherwise you'll be looking forever.
2. Know what you are bidding on. Look for proof of the diamond. While a certified diamond is best (comes with a gem report) you don't have to have it. But you do want to look for some kind of paperwork that lets you know that the diamond is a real stone, not a fake, and that you are getting the quality that you pay for.
3. Know the seller. Look at the seller's rating and feedback. A high rating means that many others have bought from him/her and the other customers were satisfied with their purchase. If the seller was a new seller, or had a low rating, then there is no way to know for sure that the seller is reputable.
4. Read the entire description. You want a seller that will take returns if you aren't happy. Look at the cost of shipping and insurance in addition to the bidding price. You don't want to go over your spending limit because the seller charges a lot of money to ship and insure the ring. The seller should list all of their terms and conditions on the item page, or in their about me page.
5. If the ring sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. While you may come across the odd item that is a real steal, most diamonds are priced for close to what they are worth. If it says "diamond ring" with very little or no information, no report, and no proof of authenticty, then you probably aren't buying a real diamond, but a diamond-like stone, like Moissanite.
