mainly to "help" with the cash crops the colonist were growing, such as tobacco, sugar, cotton and any other crop they were into. eventually this also would include trade work (carpentry, smithing etc), as well as house work.

They were brought to work on the plantations. Plantations frist produced tobacco. Then owners were forced to plant corn as well as tobacco. The plantations also produced wheat, fruit, vegetables, and livestock.
