When at a loss for words in a situation like this, it is best to put yourself in your friend's shoes. Just think of the pain he must be feeling and consider what you would like to hear if it were you.

Your friend will appreciate any shared grief, but the grief that comes from your heart is the most well received. Be simple but sincere.

How would you do it if the mother was not in another country? The feelings are the same. Call him if you can not visit him personally. Talk to him about his mother.

Recently, the father of a friend passed away and I found out that the father was fond of animals. The son loved the gift I made to North Shore Animal shelter in the father's name.

Send a nice sympathy card to him with a hand written note enclosed, and/or donate some money to charity in her name.

write him a ltr or email expressing how much you care for your friend and tell them you will be there for them whenever they need...to talk, or other things.
