They are referring to marijuana... I know! It sounds crazy, right... But colitas is "little buds". "Colas" = tip of the marijuana branch said to be very potent... This has been confirmed by Irving Azoff (Eagles Management) .

A wonderful pine smelling canabis that is grown in the mountains of Northern California. When smoked it gives the warm smell of christmas trees. The buds are long and very clean.
Eagles tune "Hotel California" On a dark desert highway cool wind in my hair. Warm smell of "Colitas" rising up through the air.

"There was this fireworks factory just three blocks from the Hotel California . . . and it blew up! Big tragedy. One of the workers was named Wurn Snell and he was from the town of Colitas in Greece.
