To give the least biased answer I possibly can emo is a type of music based on teenage angst. Thinking that nobody will ever understand you, you're parents are awful people, the world is against you and there will never be a light at the end of the tunnel. That's kind of the stereotypical way of describing it.

Rachel and lp are both correct.

I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only one who didn't know what that meant. As you can tell by my sn (metalmom71), I am also very fond of the metal genre, but I listen to all types of music. I always have. Music is emotional and has an emo effect on me to this day, so I must say that I disagree with whoever coined this phrase to describe this type of music. I don't know what I would call it if I had to rename it, but I still don't like it.

Just my two cents worth : )

Some stupid trend kids decided to follow when they really don't know what it is. They just decided one day, "ohhh i'm so depressed because i got dumped so i'm gonna cut my arms and be emo!" and turned it into something it's not. The word "emo" is actually short for emotional and is used to describe music that is emotional, so that's pretty much all music, but so many people have taken it to mean something completely different, just to give something a label/stereotype.
